March 2008 Archives

I'd admit I'm an open sources freak. It's amazing how many people can actually program, true they do get tired, but since the code is open for everyone-other developers have the choice to fix what's needed fixing. Of course what I've just said was out of the blue, sorry just a bit "exalted".

I've always wanted to start a community, funny, who doesn't? In reality, it does take effort to pull a unique community, and it takes patience and determination as you wait other users to spread the word. Heck, there are tons of things you can start a community out of, but the issue is whether you show the users you care enough. They'd also want an stable site to chit chat, if you just stop paying the site because you felt it-be ready to be bitch-slapped.

I've discussed a bit on how RouteCafe would turn, but not how the system and the interface would be. There are tons of features people want in a site, and I'm coding this site from the scratch using Zend Framework. The best example on how the site will turn out: DeviantArt.

All about graphics, all about open-sources graphic programs. Users sharing their work they've done in GIMP, Inkscape, Scribus and so on. Not limited to commercial products because banning them is a bit pointless.

Features? I've been thinking of an API. Of course, the main goal right now is to actually put the hierarchy system and give the ability to the user to upload their work. I'd hope to get part of the system done before the end of summer.

Features:

  • Categorizing the artwork
  • Clean Urls
  • Your own profile with a little blog
  • Bookmarks
  • Favorites
  • Links to art, what do I mean? Have you ever heard of social community where people vote if its cool enough? Yea, that.
  • Resources Section

This is it for the first release, some features might change, and the API will be on later, including XMLRPC.
I've been using Ubuntu for the last three years, infact it's probably the longest Linux Operative System that have survived in my hard drive. Ubuntu sticks to the 'motto' "Linux for human beings" and they really do a great work providing a wealthy documentation and community. It was a bit bitter in the start, Ubuntu Forums was powered by phpBB2 and the community wasn't even big, only a few onliners to the point of 12 users online a day.

A month passed away, and the users incremented rapidly. Ubuntu made itself a hype, it was amazing to see Windows Users and Linux Users from other distros joining. A person who never used Ubuntu probably lived in a "cave", of course that is what a person in the linux ambient would think.

I left the community. I didn't contribute as much as many other people did, because well, I had my own issues to take care. I did try to help as much as I could, and after two years of being missing in action I still see people I met in the old forum online and happily contributing.

I've seen many testimonials being dugg in Digg.com. A lot of bashers, and mere trollers that just put a simple line: "ubuntu sucks". Ubuntu is notorious all over the world, while it hasn't significally affected the general public, ubuntu users spread the word to those who aren't aware of linux. Now thousands of users use ubuntu, newbies, advanced users, even experts. Which is why I believe that it's a curse to "elitists", to put it simple, linux have newcomers thanks to Ubuntu, and of course there are also other distros that tries its hardest to stand out. I'm really sure that many mature linux users, the ones that have worked hard to help users gives tribute to other distros. No efforts are wasted, regardless if it's popular or not.

Ubuntu is a noob distro? Who cares, it brought tons of new users to linux. We are here to promote linux as a desktop for windows users, not to change the fact that sometimes people migrate from other distros to Ubuntu, as so ubuntu users to other distros. You don't want linux to become popular? Well, that's your problem to deal.

Taking photos is probably one of my hobbies. I'm an amateur at it and a proud one I guess. My camera is pretty much old so I have to edit the photos in GIMP to get the colors right. Man I wish I had the money to buy a new camera :(!

Town

Well, I hope to get more interesting photos :D. I also use GIMP to get some effects done.

It seems the current blog where I was supposed to write my thoughts was taken over by my urges to support the GIMP and Image Programs. Welcome to my blog and of course this one will be personal and uncensored.

You might think that I'm going to drop this blog but believe me, I do put my thoughts on the web. I used to have a blog in a domain, funny, because when I dropped the domain some idiot registered the site and made it a porn site, what's worse is that the site is about S&M.

I originally speak Spanish, but I don't actually support in spanish because my main focus is to actually learn English fully to allow me write at least a short story. If there are any spanish people, I'll be happy to set up a spanish forum for GIMP Discussion. Just leave a comment, I'm a very very attentive guy!

I'm using Movable Type, because of my selfishness I ended up debating on what to use. I kinda got tired of WordPress, but the gimp blog uses wordpress and I can't just get rid of the content because there is a mainstream set. Now I have two great systems installed :)
